Today I am going to talk about the vision statement. Relax, take a deep breath, because it is not as difficult as you may think.
Let’s get started!
What is the purpose of a vision statement?
To define the long-term objectives or goals of your business.
- What does it describe?
It describes what you want your business to achieve and what impact it will have on the community.
Now stop, think and write down the type of business you’re starting? Once you determine that, then you can go on to the next step.
- What do you want to achieve through your business? Is it:
- To make money
- To provide for your family
- To foster positive change in the business sector
- To foster positive change in your community
- To produce the best product or service
Looking at the above list, choose one or two and build from there, by writing short statements.
Example:
Product: Gluten-free cookies
Goal: Help combat Celiac Disease.
Here we go: The Vision Statement for ‘G’ Cookie Company:
“The ‘G’ Cookie Company”, (‘G’ stands for gluten-free), will create the best gluten-free chocolate chip cookie ever, using organically sourced ingredients so as to provide a delicious, healthy, alternative dessert to those suffering from Celiac Disease. We will also contribute $1.00 dollar for every bag sold to The Celiac Disease Foundation.”
Look at that, you just wrote a Vision Statement!
Now stop procrastinating (I can identify with you on that) and write! Just begin writing and it will come.
Below you will find examples of vision statements I found online.[1]
Nordstrom: To serve our customers better, to always be relevant in their lives, and to form lifelong relationships.
Amazon: Our vision is to be Earth’s most customer-centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online.
IKEA: To create a better everyday life for the many people.
Warby Parker: We believe that buying glasses should be easy and fun. It should leave you happy and good-looking, with money in your pocket. We also believe that everyone has the right to see.
Once completed, have someone review it, or, if you’d like me to review it, click on this email link. If you want more information, we can set up an appointment for a video chat.
WHOA! YOU JUST WROTE YOUR VISION STATEMENT.
