Writing a mission statement can be daunting. I know, it was for me. First of all, you must understand the purpose of your business (Mission). To begin, answer the questions below:
- What is it you want to do?
- What is the purpose of your business? Example: To make our city’s air as clean as possible.
If you are experiencing some difficulty in identifying the purpose, do the following:
- Take some time, be still and write down the name of the business.
- Have a Pro Column and a Con Column for why you are starting the business.
- Every time you get an idea, jot it down. DO NOT RUSH THROUGH THIS PROCESS.
Soon, you will begin to see a connection between the words, and a purpose will be revealed. It won’t happen until you write it down. Now look at the questions below, write down the answers. You can add to this list by creating your own questions.
a. Who are your customers?
b. What are their concerns?
c. What do they need?
d. Will your business be able to fulfill their needs? If the answer is “Yes”, answer the next question.
e. How will your business fulfill their needs?
If you answered “Yes” to point “d”, and responded to “e”, you have just determined the purpose (Mission) of your business. REMEMBER, KEEP IT SIMPLE AND SHORT, 2 TO 3 SENTENCES.
Below, are some examples of Mission Statements:
- Walmart (WMT): We save people money so they can live better.
- Starbucks (SBUX): To inspire and nurture the human spirit—one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.
- Tesla (TSLA): To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
- JP Morgan (JPM): To be the best financial services company in the world.[1]
Once completed, have someone review it, or, if you’d like me to review it, send me a copy. If you want more information, we can set up an appointment for a video chat.
HOORAY! YOU JUST WROTE YOUR MISSION STATEMENT.
